We’re having a…
…BOY!
Baby Marotta is a boy! We’re so excited and have already started wondering what kind of personality he’ll have and who he’ll look like. There’s just something about finding out the sex of the baby that makes the pregnancy feel that much more REAL. Now that we know a little bit more about him, we can really start to imagine what our family will look like in June when he gets here.
Ever since we announced that we’re having a baby, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what my pregnancy has been like so far. So, I decided to put together a pregnancy FAQ to answer them all in one place! Have any other questions for me? Leave them in the comment section at the bottom!
Pregnancy FAQs
How have you been feeling? Have you had a lot of morning sickness?
Overall, I felt pretty good during my first trimester. I had some occasional, mild nausea, but it really wasn’t bad at all (saltines and these ginger candies helped settle my stomach). The biggest changes I felt were exhaustion (hence my brief break from blogging/Instagram 🙂 ) and food aversions. Starchy carbs were basically the only thing that appealed to me during the first 13-14 weeks. I’m doing an entire blog post recapping my whole first trimester where I’ll go into more detail on this, so stay tuned!
Were you guys trying to have a baby or was the pregnancy a surprise?
Kind of both. In September, Dario and I began talking about being ready to start a family and when we would want to start trying. Ironically enough, we didn’t even get a chance to start trying because I ended up getting pregnant that month! We really believe that everything happens for a reason, and it turns out that the timing couldn’t have been any more perfect.
We traveled home to Illinois for Christmas, and I was just far enough along at that point that we were able to tell our family and friends in person, which was really special. And Baby Marotta’s due date in June is just a couple weeks after Dario takes his first round of board exams for med school, so he’ll be able to spend some time with us at home before he begins his hospital rotations in August. We couldn’t have planned it any better if we tried!
How did you find out you were pregnant / how did you tell Dario?
I found out I was pregnant on October 12, when I was only three weeks along. I was flying home to Chicago that weekend for a short trip, and was getting ready to leave for the airport when I suddenly got this feeling that I should take a pregnancy test. I have no idea why because we hadn’t been trying to get pregnant, but something inside me just told me to take a test.
Dario was going to drive me to the airport, so he ran out to get me a test while I finished packing my bags. Since this was so spur-of-the-moment, by the time he got back with the tests, we were already running behind. I quickly took one of the tests, and impatiently waited for it to give me a result. Even though there was this voice inside me telling me to take the test, I honestly wasn’t expecting anything to come out of it. And then all of a sudden I looked down, and the pregnancy test flashed YES+. Dario was standing right next to me, so I just turned the test around to show him. Both of us were in shock but so, so happy!
We didn’t have much time to celebrate or even let the news sink in because we had to race out the door to make it to the airport on time. I brought another test with me so that I could take it again the following day. And sure enough, the next morning I took the second test and got another positive.
How did you tell your families? How did they react?
We were able to tell both our families in person, which we were so excited about. No one suspected anything, so everyone was SO surprised when we broke the news, which made it a lot of fun. We put together an announcement video ahead of time and played it for everyone. If you missed it, you can watch it here!
Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?
Even before we found out Baby Marotta’s gender, I just had a feeling he would be a boy. Dario had the same feeling. There are so many old wives’ tales out there that claim to predict whether you’re having a boy or a girl, but most of them are pretty silly. I read about a few of them just for fun, and half of them told me I would have a girl, and half told me I would have a boy. So I guess that shows how reliable those are! And honestly, who knows if my “feeling” was mother’s intuition or just a lucky guess. Either way, we’re thrilled to be welcoming a son in a few months!
Have you started thinking about names yet?
Yes! Baby Marotta already has a name and we can’t wait to share it once he’s born 🙂

I realize I am late to comment here, but I just found your blog via bloglovin’. Congratulations on the news and I hope that your pregnancy is still going well! I have an almost 14 month old boy now and I still remember how crazy tired I was that first trimester. Best of luck with everything!
