Today I’m super excited to be sharing a holiday eye makeup look with you! This look is fun and festive, yet still within a neutral color palate – which means even if you don’t normally wear a ton of makeup, you don’t need to be afraid of this look! It’s a neutral yet glam look that works for both a family Christmas party and a fun New Years Eve night out!
The eyeshadow palette I’m using is the Tartelette In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette. It’s one of my all-time favorites (it’s also featured in my Holiday Gift Guide: For Beauty Lovers), so I’m excited to finally be sharing a blog post about it! Since this is a holiday look, I’m using more of the shimmery shades (and pairing them with a bright red lip!), but the great thing about this palette is that it contains both shimmer and matte shades, so you can use it for achieving everything from a bold smokey eye a to a subtle, natural look. If you don’t have this exact palette though, don’t worry! You can apply the same steps and basic principles I’m following to any neutral eyeshadow colors.
Ok, so let’s get to it…
Step 1 / Primer
Before applying any eyeshadow, you first want to prime your eyelids to ensure your shadow doesn’t crease and that it lasts all night. Lately I’ve been priming using regular old concealer + setting powder, which has been working well for me. If you prefer a dedicated eye primer, my favorites are the SmashBox Photo Finish Lid Primer and the Urban Decay Primer Potion.
Step 2 / Base Color
Once your lids are primed, take a light matte shade and apply it all over your lid using a fluffy eyeshadow brush. This just serves as your base color, and you’ll be topping it with shimmery shades in the next step. I used the color Smarty Pants from the Tartelette palette.
Step 3 / Crease Color
Next, using the same brush, apply a shimmery shade to your crease – I used the shade Rocker. Then, go back into your crease and apply a second, darker shimmery shade right over the first one. For this step, I used the shade Firecracker.
Beauty tip: if you want an even more intense, metallic look, wet your eyeshadow brush before applying the shimmer shades. This will create a foil effect and take your look to the next level. I like to spritz my brush with this facial mist.
Step 4 / Outer Corner
Take a dark shade and apply it in a V-shape just to the outer corner of your eye; this will create a smokey effect (I used the shade Activist). I applied this shade with a stiff, flat shadow brush to ensure the dark color stayed exactly where I wanted it to: in the outer ‘V’ of my eye. You’ll want as much control as possible to avoid getting such a dark shade all over your lid and covering up the lighter colors you’ve already applied.
Step 5 / Blend
Take your fluffy shadow brush and use circular motions to blend together all the colors you’ve applied to your eyelid. This will ensure everything looks seamless and there are no harsh lines. Pay extra attention to that outer ‘V’ area – you’ll want to make sure it’s completely blended!
Step 6 / Highlight
Apply a light shimmer shade to the entire lid area below your crease – I used the shade Funny Girl. Then, take the lightest shade in your palette (it can be either a matte or a shimmer – I used the shade Charmer) and apply it to the inner corners of your eyes and to your brow bone, right under your eyebrows. This will open up your eyes and really make them pop!
Finish off your eye look with some winged liner and your favorite mascara. And of course, since this is a holiday look, I applied a bright red lip (in the shade Outlaw) for a fun, festive vibe!
