Hey guys! The topic of today’s blog post has been my most-requested topic since I started the blog, and I’m so excited to finally share it with you! Today I’m spilling all my tips on how I curl my hair! To me, there’s nothing better than feeling confident and like I’m ready to take on the day – and having great-looking hair definitely helps me feel that way. Trust me – never underestimate the power of a great hair day!
When it comes to curling my hair, I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error to find the method that helps me achieve the best curl. What I like about the particular look I’m sharing today is its versatility: the curls are loose enough for an effortless, everyday look, yet still polished and put-together. They work just as well to wear to the office during the week as they do for a fun weekend night out!
So, here are my tried-and-true tips for achieving the perfect curls that will have you looking and feeling your best any day (or night!) of the week:
Tip 1 / Curl your hair in layers
I like to divide my hair into two layers, secure the top layer with a clip, and begin by curling the bottom layer. This helps ensure I’m not grabbing too much hair at once and allows me to get closer to the root for a more even curl.
Tip 2 / Curl away from your face
I split my hair in half at my part and curl each side away from my face for a more natural look. If you want to mix it up, you can curl the front few pieces away from your face, then alternate curling away and towards your face on all the back pieces.
Tip 3 / Begin curling in the middle of each strand
Beginning with the curling iron in the middle of your strand of hair will help you avoid a bottom-heavy curl, where the bottom of your hair has a tight curl and the top has barely any. Start by clamping your hair in the middle of the strand and wrapping the top half of your hair around the iron. Hold it for 3-5 seconds, then slightly release the clamp and move the iron down the strand to complete the rest of the curl.
Tip 4 / Leave the bottom 1-2 inches of each strand out of the curl
This is my number one tip for achieving great-looking curls! Leaving 1-2 inches of hair out of the bottom of the curl will help you achieve that effortless, beachy curl as opposed to a tight, Shirley Temple-style curl.
Tip 5 / Let your curls cool completely before touching them
I always comb through my hair after I curl it to achieve a loose, undone style – but waiting for it to cool down before I do is the key to ensuring my curls have a chance to set so that they last as long as possible. I like to apply my makeup while I wait for my curls to set, and by the time I’m finished, they’re cool enough for me to run my fingers through.
Tip 6 / Use great products
The tools you use on your hair definitely make a big difference in achieving a great finished product. These are my favorite products and tools that I swear by and that I use every time I curl my hair:
- Hot Tools 24k Gold Curling Iron, 1-1/4 inch barrel – this is my favorite curling iron! Its affordable, durable, and has lasted me several years!
- DryBar Triple Sec volumizing spray – this volumizing spray smells AMAZING and gives me instant volume and body without making my hair crunchy or sticky.
- Moroccanoil Treatment – I use this on my ends and it makes my hair super smooth and shiny.
- Butterfly clips – these are the clips I use to separate my hair into two different layers as I curl.
- Hairspray – I personally don’t use hairspray to hold my curls – it’s just my personal preference! I prefer to use as little product as possible, and I find that the volumizing spray I use is enough to help me achieve long-lasting curls. But if you’re someone who prefers to finish with hairspray, the Living Proof Flex Hold Hairspray is a great one that won’t weigh down your hair!
I hope this helps you achieve hair that you love! If you use any of these tips, I’d love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sarahmarotta_
