I’ve had oily skin since I can remember, and one thing that’s always been a challenge for me is trying to control the shine during the warm summer months. Summer is quickly approaching down here in Alabama, and my skin knows it! On days that are particularly hot and humid, my foundation usually starts to break up within a few hours, which is definitely frustrating after taking time to carefully apply it in the morning.
I recently discovered a new combination of five beauty products that has been a game changer for my oily skin. Some of the products I’ve been using for a while, and some are new to my makeup routine. But when used together, these products lock my makeup into place, prevent my skin from getting super oily, and keep my makeup looking fresh throughout the entire day. Keep reading for my tips and favorite products for oily skin!
Tips + products for oily skin
Use mattifying products
The Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is one of my favorite products for oily skin and something I’ve been using for a few years now. Rather than using it alone as my foundation, I prefer to mix a drop of it into whatever foundation or BB cream I’m wearing that day. This helps give the makeup a mattifying effect without making my skin look super flat, which a lot of matte-finish foundations tend to do if you use them alone.
If you like to wear eyeshadow but find that your lids get oily and the shadow doesn’t last very long, try the Smashbox 24-hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer. Not only does it help my eyeshadow last all day, but it makes the shadow look much more vibrant and pigmented than if you were to apply it to just a bare eyelid.
Set your face
I always use a translucent powder to set my face once my foundation and concealer are applied to help the products last longer on my skin. The Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder is my current favorite because it sets my makeup without giving me a cakey, overly powdered look, and since it’s not tinted I don’t have to worry about it changing the color of my foundation. If your skin is really oily like mine, most likely you’ll have to touch-up your skin with more powder at some point throughout the day. This one is great for touch-ups because it blends in quickly, soaks up excess oil, and melts into your skin without looking like you’re wearing multiple layers of product.
Be prepared for touch-ups on the go
Blotting papers are a must-have if you have oily skin! Keep them in your purse so you can easily touch up your makeup on the go. These mattifying blotting films are a great option because they soak up oil without smudging your makeup.
Use an oil-control setting spray
This is the number one product I recommend to anyone who has oily skin. The De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray by Urban Decay is my latest beauty obsession. If I could only choose one product to control my oil, it would be this setting spray. It locks all my makeup into place and prevents my skin from looking shiny so that whatever products I’m wearing – foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, etc. – stay put and don’t fade throughout the day. It is AMAZING. I spray 2-3 pumps onto my face as the last step after all my makeup is applied, and it keeps my makeup looking fresh until I’m ready to take it off at the end of the day.
These products have made a big difference in helping my makeup last on my oily skin, even in warmer weather. I hope they work as well for you as they do for me! And if you use any of the products or tips I mentioned in this post, I’d love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sarahmarotta_
