I don’t know about you, but for me, basics like cotton tanks, denim shorts, and t-shirt dresses in neutral colors and patterns are my go-to closet staples during summertime. They’re easy, versatile, and can be mixed and matched with each other to create a ton of different outfits! But as much as I love my basics, some days I have the urge to add a little something extra to my outfits. Whether it’s for date night, a summer wedding, or just a regular weekday when I’m feeling a little bit sassy, it’s always nice to have some accessories on hand to make my outfit a little more interesting when I want to mix things up.
When it comes to choosing accessories to add into my wardrobe, I try to choose accent pieces that are fun enough to spice up my typical outfits, but not so out-there that I won’t be comfortable wearing them regularly. So, I’m sharing six of my go-to accessories that I’ve already started rotating into my wardrobe this summer:
1 // Kimono
A kimono is a great accent piece to keep in your wardrobe because it can completely transform the look of pretty much any summer outfit. Whether it’s a tank top and shorts, cropped leggings and a t-shirt, or a dress, kimonos can be layered over so many different pieces to add a pop of color or fun pattern to an otherwise neutral outfit. Plus, it’s a great way to keep your shoulders covered on a chilly summer night or inside air-conditioned buildings. I’ve been wearing this kimono with a subtle stripe detail a ton lately.
2 // Wicker crossbody bag
A wicker or straw bag just screams ‘summer’, and this one has the cutest pompom detail that adds a fun touch without looking too juvenile. I also found a similar, more affordable option here. It’s just the right size to fit all your essentials without being bulky, making it the perfect accessory for a beach vacation, summer date night, or weekend brunch.
3 // Oversized sunglasses
Every girl needs at least one pair of oversized sunglasses! They add a touch of sophistication to any outfit, whether you’re going for a chic look or a more casual vibe. Plus, they’re the perfect accessory to throw on when you want to feel put-together without actually having to wear any makeup (one of my favorite beauty hacks!). This pair by BP. is super affordable, and the tortoise shell pattern and pairs well with any outfit. I also love this fun option with colored lenses if you’re up for something bolder.
4 // Fun earrings
A fun pair of earrings is one of the easiest ways to add a little something extra to any outfit. Plus, since earrings with tassels and fringe are very in right now, you can find a ton of different styles and colors at varying price points to fit your own unique style. I’m currently obsessed with this pair by Baublebar. I love the large size and fringe detail on them, and the fact that they’re still a neutral color makes them the perfect accent accessory for any minimalist.
5 // Floppy hat
Floppy hats aren’t just for the beach! Try pairing one with a feminine summer dress for a Kentucky Derby vibe, or with denim shorts and a classic t-shirt to make even the simplest summer outfit instantly more stylish. I love the black ribbon detail on this one – plus it’s SO affordable!
6 // Leopard print flats
Shoes with fun patterns or bright colors are a great way to spice up a neutral outfit, especially if you’re not ready to commit to wearing bolder pieces up near your face (like earrings or a hat). These leopard print flats add an element of fun to an otherwise simple outfit and are a less in-your-face option since they’re down on your feet!
